Tamas Society is a non-governmental organization registered in 2009 under the West Bengal Society Registration Act, 1961. The Society began its work in underserved communities with a practical focus on healthcare access and awareness in hard-to-reach areas of Hooghly District.
From the beginning, Tamas Society’s approach has been to work directly with communities and respond to needs that are often difficult for vulnerable families to access.
Where Our Work Began
One of the Society’s early initiatives was a free General Health Check-up and Awareness Camp at Bansberia New Boy’s Club in Hooghly.
The camp brought together several essential health services in one programme, including:
- Blood Pressure testing
- Blood Sugar testing
- ECG
- Hepatitis B vaccination
- Eye testing
- Identification of cataract patients
- Cataract operations for identified patients
The entire programme was provided completely free of cost. It was among the first initiatives of its kind in the area and received strong support from the people who needed these services most.
From Healthcare to Child Development
Following this work, Tamas Society extended its activities to another important community need — nutrition and education for extremely underprivileged children.
The Society supported the Nutritious Meal Programme at Chetla Lock Gate, Ward 82 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, serving children between 5 and 14 years of age.
The programme combines remedial teaching with nutritious meals, supporting 100 children at the centre with the aim of strengthening both their education and healthy development.
The project is supported by SBI Foundation.
Our Approach
The history of Tamas Society reflects an approach grounded in direct community intervention — identifying practical needs, creating programmes around those needs and working to make essential services accessible to people who may otherwise struggle to obtain them.
From health camps in underserved areas to programmes combining education and nutrition for vulnerable children, Tamas Society has developed its work around the needs of the communities it serves.
